The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), which is a division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and a "central hub for reporting cybercrime," has published its annual report on internet crime. Based on this report, "IC3 received 800,944 complaints," with a "potential loss" for victims of more than $10.2 billion in 2022."
The report provides an overview of the relevant threat caused by different forms of internet fraud. More precisely, the focus is on statistics related to:
Business Email Compromise, i.e., a form of scam also targeting businesses in relation to the transfer of funds;
Investment scam, i.e., a category of scam affecting the investment, including those referred to as cryptocurrencies;
Ransomware, i.e., a form of malware that encrypts data on a computer and makes it not usable;
Call Center Fraud, i.e., an illegal call center that commits fraud against thousands of victims, especially the elderly.
